We encourage youth leadership.

We believe our youth are as capable of success as their peers. As tomorrow's leaders, they must start developing leadership skills as early on as possible. We provide those opportunities through organized team-building events like field trips, college campus tours, and celebrations. Building leadership also takes strong communication skills, so we give them opportunities to get to know each other through our Youth Advisory Board, Saturday STEM classes and Job Shadow Days.

Youth Advisory Board

The board is made up of Pivotal scholars who meet regularly to work on a shared project, provide a foster youth perspective to executive leadership, and give feedback about new and existing Pivotal programs. They also publish our YES Scholar e-newsletter to keep our scholar community updated with issues that affect young people from foster care.

Youth Event

Celebrating the holidays and important milestones together is an important part of community building. Our scholarship students kick-off each school year with a Back to School Orientation. We host workshops to help get them prepared for the school year and have a lot of fun! In December, we have our annual holiday party.  We invite students and their families to enjoy tasty food, crafts, games, and a visit from Santa!

youth leadership - saturday stem class 2

Saturday STEM classes

High school youth are invited to participate in our Saturday STEM program. Students meet over 9 weeks to work on group projects in coding, robotics, and gamification. They often arrive knowing nobody, and leave nine weeks later with an entirely new group of friends.  Each STEM session culminates with a graduation ceremony, during which students speak about their experience and the skills they gained.

College Tours

We expose foster youth to opportunities beyond what they see every day. We take students on college tours, so they can get a taste of campus life and meet foster youth just like them who are thriving in college.

Job Shadow Days

We believe that exposing youth to dedicated professionals and office environments is a valuable tool in career readiness.  Job Shadow Days help foster youth begin to imagine themselves in a professional workplace one day.  And, there's nothing quite like your first time visiting the hosted snack bar at a Silicon Valley tech firm!

Field Trips

Our community partners and individual donors generously offer us free tickets to theater shows, concerts, or sporting events our youth enjoy. These opportunities build connections between young people and allow them to participate in activities they typically cannot experience on their own.

It feels good because you’re next to someone who understands you.
